PLANT OF THE MONTH: JULY 2010
SEDUMS
By Dr. Rahpee Thongthiraj

July is an ideal time to grow succulents as versatile and colorful as Sedums. Commonly referred to as “stonecrops” or low growing plants, this family has over 400 species of leaf succulents, found throughout the northern hemisphere, mainly Central America and Asia.  You can find varieties of Sedums from annual groundcovers to shrubs.

Sedum nussabaumeranum
Sedum morganianum “Donkey’s Tail” If you would like to plant beautiful, low-maintenance succulents in your garden, Sedums would be perfect for borders, containers, hanging baskets, rock gardens, and window boxes.  The Sedum morganianum (“Donkey’s Tail”) is a popular variety that makes an attractive plant with pendant stems that may reach 3 feet or longer. Native of Mexico, the "Donkey's Tail" has spindle-shaped leaves with a silver-blue cast to them. When mature to a hanging basket size, the "Donkey's Tail" blossoms with delicate pink flowers.

Possessing water-storing leaves, most Sedums can tolerate dry periods.  Such examples of low-growing types are Sedum acre (“Golden Stonecrop”) and Sedum reflexum. These varieties form moss-like groundcovers and are ideal for dry, sunny locations.  You can enjoy these hardy succulents throughout the year, particularly during the summer when there is abundant sunshine for new growth and flowering.  Most Sedums have lovely blossoms ranging from white to pink to yellow.

You can easily propagate Sedums by leaves and pieces, whether upright or cascading types. Use a pair of pruning shears and a plastic tray or container filled with a well-draining Cactus Mix. Keep the propagated pieces or cuttings in a sunny location, preferably outdoors. The best time to propagate Sedums would be during the late spring thru summer. To ensure healthy growth, fertilize once a month with a water soluble formula or mix a slow-release fertilizer in the soil every three months.

With so many varieties to choose from, Sedums make perfect plants for rock gardens, borders, and landscape accents.  Whether you are looking for an easy plant to start your succulent collection or to transform your garden, Sedums will range in leaf color and texture, thus providing you with beauty and low-maintenance care.
